Sim racers, and to be honest gamers in general, are always looking for experiences that are customised to them. This is especially true for sim racers as we not only need to have full control over the settings of each car we drive, but also the extra data and overlays we see on screen, as well as what we hear. There are so many iRacing add-ons I could have running at the same time to deliver different information to me, but I found the more I had, the more distracted I became.

Once there, everyone else on track also with the Trading Paints tool installed which is just about everyone on iRacing will be able to see you running with your fresh custom livery. Likewise, if they have a custom livery on their car you will also be able to see them running with it.

Click here to go to the Trading Paints website. Crew Chief adds these in and much more. Even better, voice recognition can be activated so you can ask for information or actions to be taken. The most useful ones I found were asking Crew Chief to fuel me to the end of the race at the next pitstop, and to turn off changing tyres. All meaning I can focus on driving while making these changes rather than using my mouse or other buttons to change these.

If you are going to use Crew Chief, just make sure you turn off the default iRacing spotter in the Options first. Click here to go to the Crew Chief website. Specifically designed for iRacing, RaceLabApps provides overlays for both you and for any videos or streaming you might be doing. At the time of writing it is still in a Beta version, but updates have been releasing every few days from the dedicated creator, Istvan Fodor.

New features and improvements are being added all the time, all communicated out via the Discord channel where this tool can also be downloaded from. Relative Positions — showing you details of the 3 cars in front and behind you, along with information about the race like laps, time, temperatures, strength of field and more, all customisable.

I tend to have this on my small second screen to just glance over at. Standings — best to use this one as a stream or video overlay rather being on your screen while racing if you want to avoid distractions. Fuel Calculator — my most used overlay which I have in the corner of my main screen. This is what I use to calculate how much fuel I need to put in at the next stop to get me to the end of a race without over fuelling.

Click here to go to the RaceLabApps Discord where you can download the tool and chat with the developer and other users. Those were the 3 that I mainly use today, but there are many more available that may do more of what you want. Like this article and want to support? Trading Paints. Crew Chief. The overlays currently include, at the time of writing: Relative Positions — showing you details of the 3 cars in front and behind you, along with information about the race like laps, time, temperatures, strength of field and more, all customisable.

Advanced Panel — a cool F1-style gear and speed indicator with a few bells and whistles. Battle Bot — a dynamic view to show gaps with the cars around you as they change. I used this one before I started using RaceLabApps. Although one thing I do fire JRT back up for is to take screenshots in iRacing as the function is excellent.

Has free and paid versions. It can be used to work with external hardware like bass shakers, as well as dashboards and overlays which either you can create or download pre-made ones. VRS Virtual Racing School — Usually associated with getting setups for cars in iRacing via the paid subscription, just having the tool downloaded and the free subscription tier active can really benefit some racers.GitHub is home to over 50 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.

So what are you waiting for?Whether it be the line I take through a corner or the amount of braking that I do, these little differences all add up to a large amount of time difference at the end of a lap.

Being able to see exactly where this time is going in a post-race or practice analysis is one of the keys to getting faster.

CrewChief is awesome. CrewChief is an all-in-one race management tool which allows you to set up tactics, get race information, lap times, and a bunch of other things over the radio, even allowing you to communicate back.

It also doubles as a greatly improved spotter when compared to the default iRacing one. One of the greatest features that CrewChief has is the ability to handle the logistics of a pit-stop for you. As I mentioned before, CrewChief also has a built-in spotter which in my opinion is far superior to the iRacing default spotter.

Buy iRacing Subscription Plan

It gives more information, lap times, general race updates, specifics on crashes in upcoming corners… the list goes on. I run CrewChief with every sim that I play that is compatible. A minority of games are only compatible with the spotter features and not the crew chief features but it is still great. If you have seen YouTube videos or Twitch streams of people with some crazy custom paint jobs on their cars and wondering how they get them, then the answer is Trading Paints.

Trading Paints is a tool that allows users to upload custom liveries which can be used by the community. In order for people to see your livery and you to be able to see theirs, both drivers must have Trading Paints installed and running. Fortunately, though, a majority of the iRacing community uses Trading Paints so you will almost always be able to experience a full race of customer liveries.

There are hundreds of custom liveries available on Trading Paints. What I usually end up doing is sorting by popular and scrolling down until I find something that I like. SIMRacingApps is a fantastic app for allowing you to build fully customizable dashes, timing boards, overlays, admin panels, and really just about anything else that you want for iRacing.

The best thing about SIMRacingApps is that it is a web server that is run from your computer which means you are able to connect other devices to it and have various displays and dashes on your phone, tablet, external monitorsor just about any other device with a screen that can connect to your PC through a browser.

Not only can you set up things like dashes and live timing boards, but you can even set up full spotter dashboards where you can control the pit stops for your driver, traffic, flag callouts, wrecks, etc. It is super powerful once you start to play around with it a bit. SIMRacingApps has a bunch of uses and once you figure out what you need, whether that be extra overlays during a race or an external monitoring system of some kind, then you can probably do it in SIMRacingApps.

It gets a bit of hate because it makes a beeping noise indicating to you that you need to shift gears and there are drivers in the community that argue that you should use the noise of the engine or the shift lights to give you that information. I use it as a way to optimise my shifting and therefore speed, and according to Sebastian Vettel, Formula 1 drivers have the same thing in their cars.

Applications and plugins

Because of this, I choose to run it and I find it helps a lot. Simple, effective, and works great. Well, there you have it. A handful of apps and addons that I use every time that I race on iRacing.
