The Monument to the laboratory mouse is a sculpture in the city of Novosibirsk in Siberia, Russia. It is located in a park in front of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciencesand was completed on July 1,coinciding with the th anniversary of the founding of the city. According to Nikolai Kolchanov, the director of the institute, the monument commemorates the sacrifice of the mice in genetic research used to understand biological and physiological mechanisms for developing new drugs and curing of diseases.
The monument, which sits on a granite pedestal, is of a laboratory mouse wearing pince-nez on the tip of its nose. The mouse holds knitting needles in its paws and is shown knitting a double helix of DNA.
The DNA spiral emerging from the knitting needles winds to the left, thus showing that it is the still poorly understood Z-DNA - this symbolic of scientific research that is still to be done.
The foundation stone of the monument was laid on June 1,in honor of the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. The design for the mouse was the creation of the Novosibirsk artist Andrey Kharkevich, who made more than ten sketches before settling on a final design.
It was from among the different versions of the classic and stylized image animals that a mouse knitting the DNA helix was selected. Andrei Kharkevich described the statue as: "Here, the images of a laboratory mouse and a scientist are combined because they are connected to each other and serve one cause. The mouse is shown at the exact time of scientific discovery. If you peer into its eyes, you can see that this mouse has already invented something.
But the whole symphony of scientific discovery, joy, "Eureka! Sculptor Alexei Agrikolyansky, who made the statue, confessed that it had not been easy to capture that moment as the mouse was obviously not human and yet he had to produce a character and emotions for the mouse that were believable and, while maintaining the anatomical proportions, create something that neither looked like a cartoon character nor a real mouse.
The sculpture was cast from bronze in Tomsk by Maxim Petrov. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Monument to the laboratory mouse. Smithsonian Magazine. Retrieved Boing Boing. There is a trade-off between the fraction of disordered residues detected and the extent of over-prediction, and groups have adopted different compromises in this respect. Comparison of performance at the same over-prediction rates highlights the role of related structures in some methods rather than others, with different groups achieving the highest sensitivity for different target sets.
Over-all, the methods are clearly of considerable use in identifying potential disorder. National Center for Biotechnology Information, U. After playing catch-up to evolve their approach to reach Millennials, marketers will move more quickly in 2017 to connect with Generation Z. Gen Z is coming of age in a post-linear digital world.
Knowledge about everything is at their fingertips and on demand whenever they want it. These shifts will help drive brand growth and increase the power of digital as a channel for brands to meaningfully connect with this audience.
Connectivity has a fundamental influence on how people consume media and make brand choices. It gives brands the opportunity to increase reach exponentially. Marketers need to better meet the personal expectations of their consumers across different touchpoints. The consumer journey has changed dramatically in recent years.
Different types of consumers take different paths to purchase, and each use the internet in their own way. Trends in Europe, for example show that consumers pass from social, to brand-owned, to offline touchpoints throughout the consumer journey.
But in emerging markets there is a far greater preference to interact with brands on social at all stages. These differences create big challenges for channel owners, forced to play multiple roles and juggle numerous requests.I will be back with daily updates in the Musing section as well as regular Tweets and Facebook updates.
Site last updated at 8 PM ET yesterday, but I hope to have the data flowing in the next few hours. In the meanwhile, will tweet out updates if anything changes. But, should not be a huge worry. UPDATE: all fixed by 11:30 AM ET today. Sorry for any issues Are prediction markets now too stable, because people trust them too much. I explore with Andrew Gelman in a new post at Slate. I know it is not as sexy or important as the president, but senate races are just really exciting.
Wisconsin and Illinois are very likely Democrats gains from Republicans in blue states. Nevada is now a tight hold for the Democrats. Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Florid are all leaning Republican by a whisker. Ohio and North Carolina are leaning Republican a little more strongly.
The chart tracks the probability of victory on PredictWise since we started state-by-state predictions on February 27, 2016. I know that an efficient market should have everything priced in immediately, but the state-by-state predictions have slipped slightly above the national predictions in the last few days.
She just needs to win one of those and she is president. At this point I have been constructing the predictions independently and they have stayed very consistent. If this divergence continues I will become increasingly concerned about whether the national markets are suppressed.
If there is a good lesson for American public opinion from Brexit it this. The two set of voters: leave and remain, live in a totally different reality. The remain voters got increasingly freaked out about the British economy as a possibility turned into a reality. The leave voters, most of them, assume that it was meaningless fit of the elite bankers who were upset they did not get their way. A small fraction of leave voter regret their vote. But, remain would most likely win a re-vote, because a huge number of non-voters feel silly for not voting remain.
Brexit happened, what does that mean for the USA. This does not affect how I predict the USA election, because (1) the USA has a long history of data versus a one-shot event (2) the USA has many outcomes to calibrate on versus just one outcome (3) we have more data for the USA election than Brexit.
But, we certainly learned that a segment of the UK voters really want immigration restrictions and trade barriers.
And then there were two. While Bernie Sanders is technically still running, Donald Trump v. This lead may be surprisingly small to some people (Democrats) or surprisingly large to others (believers in fundamental models). A lot more to follow in the next 6 months and 4 days. It has been so much fun, but there is a really good chance that the primary effectively ends in 30 minutes feeling nostalgic yet. A quick post on the state of the election at 191 until Election Day.

But City do come into this one on the back of their first defeat of the season after going down 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk in Kharkiv on Wednesday night.
All the stats and form point towards a City win and it could potentially be a crucial blow in the title race, but anything is possible here.
Missed sitter, unbelievable screamer. This may take a second or two. The Chargers are one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now having won 6 of the last 8 games including three wins in a row after starting the season 0-4.
They can become the second team in NFL history to make the playoffs after starting the season 0-4 as they are tied for the division lead and are playing the best football out of all of the teams in the AFC West. The Redskins have a minute chance of making the playoffs at 5-7 and will need a lot of help in order to do so.
These two teams have played each other 10 times with the Redskins leading the series 7-3.
The Redskins won the last matchup in 2013 by a score of 30-24. The Redskins are 5-7 SU and 5-7 ATS. Kirk Cousins is one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the NFL and will likely be one of the top free agents in the offseason unless Washington decides to franchise him again. He lacks a true WR1 after their key free agent signing, Terrelle Pryor, has been a bust. Josh Doctson and Jamison Crowder have had decent seasons, but not elite numbers.
Jamison Crowder leads the team in receiving with 51 catches for 628 yards and 1 touchdown. The running game has been below average as the Redskins have been forced to use three running backs this season in Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine. Both Kelley and Thompson have found their way onto the IR and Perine leads the Redskins in rushing with 465 yards and a touchdown. The defense has been mediocre as they rank 25th in points allowed per game, 15th in rushing yards allowed per game and 20th in passing yards allowed per game.
The Chargers are 6-6 SU and 6-5-1 ATS. The Chargers started the season 0-4, but have since gone 6-2 and have a chance to be only the second team in NFL history to start 0-4 and make the playoffs. Philip Rivers has been playing at an All Pro level this season and should make the Pro Bowl.
Keenan Allen has been able to stay healthy all season after missing time in every year since his rookie season and lead the team in receiving with 77 receptions for 1,032 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Melvin Gordon is a good NFL running back who is averaging 3. Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram are two of the best defensive ends in the NFL at getting to the quarterback and should be able to get pressure on Cousins in this matchup. The defense ranks 6th in points allowed per game, 32nd in rushing yards allowed per game and 7th in passing yards allowed per game.
The Redskins have faltered while the Chargers have surged as the season has progressed.Keep Your Anti-Virus Software Up to Date. Run Regularly Scheduled Scans with Your Anti-Virus Software.
