I highly recommend 3 way. At radio shack it was called a middle off switch. That way your drive motor is not constantly running. I came home and soldered the wires to the switch. A note before we start. This is a fairly easy process, the most trouble i had was trying to figure out where to put the switch. I ended up taking out my card reader on my PS3 because i never use it and just mounted the switch there. You could possibly let it hang out.
It's up to you. The Switch I purchased: 1- Solder a wire from pin 6 to pin 1. I'd say make the length about a foot just to be safe. You can cut off what you don't need later. Doesn't matter which way you connect those.
PlayStation 3 Troubleshooting
Hii have resent had a problem with my blue ray drive would not read media such as, blue ray movies, games, dvds ,and cds. So I bought a new blue ray drive off ebay that had its own controller board connected to the drive already. I decided to get the balls to call sony myself, and ask them the question "can i swap this drive for mine with a controller board attach to it, and will my ps3 recongize it"? Last edited: Jan 18, ShakotahJan 18, I will add it to the ultimate sticky when you absolutely confirm it in a week.
OnerJan 18, RichDomiJan 18, YES i called sony and they told me it will work. I said yeah to them that is what i thought, because if sony made all these different controller boards for these blue ray drives it wouldn't be that effective. Let us know how it works out for you, but myself and others here have tried and it does not work. RichDomiJan 19, I had tech agent check for me on it and they said i can swap the drive with no problem with that circuit controller board on it, but yes i will soon.
I still hope it works too, because i want to get my ps3 working again. Last edited: Jan 19, One thing I still don't get, Been reading about all this talk about it with no definitive answer, but if sony claims that it is doable, then why is it every post I read attempted and failed?
ShakotahJan 19, I am not quite sure but she told me it will swap with no problem. IF this is a problem i will be calling them first thing. They said the drives are not keyed and long as it is a sony ps3 controller board it will work. She said there is no reason for me to put my ps3 controller from my ps3 onto the drive because they are the samething You can always ask sony yourself i mean it doesn't seem like they care if you ask those type of questions.
Just so we are cleard, the drives itself it not keyed to the motherboard or the controller board. Its been tried many times and it does not work believe me. Well i said i had a 80gb ps3 and i am putting a drive with a controller already attach from a mgs4 80gb console.
I ask her the question can i use this controller on my ps3 and will it be keyed or locked to my motherboard, because i have heard people say on forums that they are infacted keyed or locked to the motherboard of that console and there is no way to get around it. The only way is to use that controller that came with that console.
They told me straight up i will have no problem swaping out my drive for that drive with the controller ATTACHED, so why would they lie if its not true?
Sony wouldn't honor the warranty, so I decided to take it apart and see if I could diagnose the problem. I noticed that the drive motor isn't turning at all. From my experience when a disk is inserted into a drive, even if it doesn't read the disk, the drive motor usually gives a couple of quick little movements.
The laser lights up, and goes back and forth on it's shaft, just as it should, but there's no life from the drive motor. The motor seems to turn by hand fine, so it doesn't seem to be seized up in any way.
Does anyone have an idea of what part of the drive is bad? Last edited: Jun 19, PsiLizardJun 12, I think your best bet is taking it to a local electronics shop and let them fix it.
DXDCJun 12, Thanks for the response, but unfortunately, I own the closest thing to and electronics shop in town.
I just have never seen a drive do this, so I'm looking for some advice. I tested the contacts that power the motor, and they're only briefly getting. I don't know if the laser unit is simply not registering a disk, and therefore not powering the motor, or if there's some sort of problem with the drive controller board.
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction, before I was time or money suspecting the wrong part of the drive. Maybe post it in the Blu Ray forum too, never know, hopefully someone can help you. How long have you had it for? I've had it for less than a year, even the manufacture date on the system says sept But after a while of being on the phone with Sony, no receipt, no warranty.
Either way I took matters into my own hands when Sony wouldn't help me. I've disassembled it, so the warranty is no good anyway. PsiLizardJun 14, I know that it sucks but it beats paying full price again. Seriously what the hell, Ive had and still play my original NES which Ive had for close to 20 years now and that still works.Log in or Sign up.
So this is all I try with mi ps3, so any advice for future tests will be appreciated, I really, really thanks you a lot for all your help and support, Thanks, Federico PS: sorry for mi english. Federico, your english is very good, I understood everything you said in your post, thanks!
Great information there. Did you put your blue ray drive into your friends PS3 using his controller board? If your drive works, then you can definitely focus in on either the controller board or your motherboard. I am pretty much have the same problem as you do, however my drive will take in and eject the disks, it just won't spin, even after 5 yes, FIVE laser assembly replacements.
I haven't heard about using Linux to see the firmware, and to be honest it's not something I would try myself, I cannot imagine screwing that up!! I think we can pretty much conclude that yes, your blue ray drive controller board is married or keyed to the motherboard.PS3SLIM CECH 2002x 120GB Blu Ray Drive Replacement FULL HD
If someone ever figured out a way to break that useless feature I would be one happy dude!! Well, I'll try to figure out that BGA chip you're referring to and try to swap it and see if that works. Is that what the chip is called? Thanks oxbullsey I didn't know without the correct drive controller board you can't even play downloaded games. Wow Frederico good info and your english is just fine!
I was looking all over trying to find which chip contained the controller firmware. Also that's a shame the drive controller chip did not work for you I have a friend who works in a lab that does rework and such If I can ever get this to happen I will of course post results. I was wondering if anyone has a link to an open and running ps3 drive that is broken or working so I can see how bright this laser is supposed to be.
It should look like a laser pointer, it's definitely not a dim light. RichDomiNov 6, Well, I'm going to give it a go tonight or tomorrow. I actually have 4 controller boards, 2 of which are the wrong revision, so I'll practice on those if I can find my darn heat gun that is If I get anywhere with it I'll post up after I play for like 12 hours straight!!
Man, 64 pins on that BGA doesn't sound promising to get a clean re-install. Anyway, keep us posted.
I should be getting an new controller board and will try to swap the IC controller chip to see if that fixed my issue crossing my fingers. RichDomiNov 7, Sorry to deviate from the current discussion, but I've tested my Blu-Ray drive with the disc exposed and have observed a couple things.Verify that the power cable is plugged in properly and not loose.
Also, verify that your source of power the outlet functions correctly. The indicator light on the PlayStation 3 starts green, switches to yellow, and then quickly switches to red, and blinks indefinitely. The PlayStation 3 will display this error for two different reasons. To determine what is causing the error on your console, turn the console on, and listen closely for the fan. If the fan powers on briefly, and then switches off, you have an issue with the motherboard.
If the fan does not power on at all, then you likely have an issue with the power supply. The most common cause of the YLOD error and the PlayStation 3 failing to boot is a hardware malfunction on the motherboard. One cause of the PlayStation 3 not booting is a faulty power supply. A much smaller percentage of PS3 consoles will display the yellow light as a result of a faulty power supply.
If the power supply is faulty, then it will need to be replaced. There are two models of Blu-ray drives for the fat models of PlayStation 3, each with parts specific to their own model. The easiest way to tell which kind of drive is in your PlayStation 3 is to take the drive out and look at it.
If the drive has an exposed control board on the bottom of the Blu-ray drive, the Blu-ray drive's model number is KEM If there is no exposed control board, then the Blu-ray drive's model number is KEM If your PlayStation 3 is not reading discs, or is reading discs inconsistently, then follow this flow chart to fully diagnose the problems with your Blu-Ray Drive.
Step 1. Insert a disk into the PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Drive. Step 2. Clean the Disk - Using a cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth, clean the disc. Realigning the gears in the blu-ray drive is fairly simple. Depending on the type of Blu-ray drive you have, you will need to either follow this guide or this guide. If your IR Sensor is no longer working, you can attempt to replace it, however, it will in no way affect the performance of your Blu-ray drive.
If you have judged that the Control Board is no longer functioning properly, then you will likely need to send your PlayStation to Sony. The Control Board is paired to the Motherboard and will only work with its original partner board. If everything is working great, then you no longer need this troubleshooting guide. Being a very fragile piece of technology, it is easy for the lens to break.
Both types of Blu-ray drives have a specific lens that will only work with that type of drive. If your PS3 freezes, turn off the game system by holding down the power button. Turn it back on by pushing the power button again. If you have continuous, excessive lag during online play, you should first verify that the ethernet cable is properly plugged in. If you continue to have lag, the problem may be your internet connection.
You can still see all customer reviews for the product. Top positive review. Reviewed in the United States on August 27, I bought the drive to replace a broken drive in my ps3. Installed easily and it works. The outside was a little scratched but no problems and I have had it for about a month. Make sure you have a tamper proof torx bit before you get it, you need it to open the case, amazon usually shows one as something customers also bought.
Top critical review. Reviewed in the United States on July 12, I was really happy when I originally replaced the drive and it brought my PS3 back to life by letting me use the optical drive again.
However after about six months it stopped working again yes I'm just now getting around to reviewing this, it's been broken for about six months now. Not happy. Rather than trying the lens only, I decided to replace the entire drive, so I bought this one.
I was surprised to see that it was slightly dinged up, it had obviously been in a PS3 before as the one inside my PS3 was pristine. Regardless, I replaced my drive with this one, swapped the boards apparently you can only use your existing board as it's paired with the PS3and the PS3 now reads Blu-Ray again.
I'll update my review if I find otherwise. Oddly, the description says the picture doesn't show the chip board because this one doesn't come with a board.
Mine did, and the pictures seem to show that it does. Definitely double check before buying, but you shouldn't need the new board anyway if you have to put your old one on the new drive. I recommend the drive if your PS3 won't spin discs. If it spins but still won't read, you might want to consider replacing the laser only as it's a cheaper part. However, it seems more difficult to me so I was happy to replace the whole thing.
