With GeoRose 0. Users can fully control the style of the diagram as in rose diagram plotting mode. At the same time, polar area diagram is ruled out in this release.

I cannot use it. Thank you Yong Technology for providing this simple yet fascinating program. It is much helpful. I am interested by this program because I will being use it very much in the scientific researches that I will being do.

Thanks Narayangopal. Currently there is no such a function available. I would like to implement it in the next version. Can I use the following format 1st column: strike angle azimuth 2nd column: dip angle 3rd column; sense e. GeoRose cannot process the format you mentioned.

You need to convert you data to degree format. No such a function available with current version.

But you may be able to achieve it by overlapping two transparent images generated by GeoRose. Would be nice to be able to create rose diagrams for dip only. Good program! I dealt with magnetotelluric now and this program is very comfortable for electrical strike. I cannot input strike of vertical fractures and frequencies of occurrence.

Cross bedding, Arizona A palaeocurrent indicator is evidence for the direction of flow at the time the sediment was deposited, and may also be referred to as the palaeoflow. The data are routinely collected when making a sedimentary logbut additional palaeocurrent data may also be collected from localities that have not been logged in order to increase the size of the data set.

Determination of the orientation of a dipping plane by the The compass - clinometer photos. The preceding analysis of sedimentary structures shows that they can be used to determine depositional processes. Because depositional processes occur in several environments, few structures are immediately diagnostic of a specific environment; assemblages of structures are most useful, as for example in a tempestite, a turbidite, or a point bar.

There is, however, one further use for sedimentary structures. They can indicate the direction of paleocurrent flow, paleoslope, paleogeography, and sand-body trend. Paleocurrent analysis, as this discipline is called, forms an integral part of facies analysis both at outcrop and, using the dipmeter, in subsurface studies. There is an extensive literature on this topic.

Potter and Pettijohn is the definitive text. The methodology, interpretation, and applications of paleocurrent analysis are now described in turn. Collection of Paleocurrent Data. A wide range of sedimentary structures can be used in paleocurrent analysis. Some structures yield only the sense of current flow, others yield both sense and direction.

Examples of the first group include groove marks, channels, washouts and parting lineation. The measurement of the orientation of sedimentary structures must be done with care.

Ideally some kind of areal sampling grid should be used for regional paleocurrent mapping. In practice, this ideal approach is commonly restricted by limitations of access, exposure and time. Each sample station will generally consist of a cliff, quarry, stream section, road cut, etc. If it is to be worth anything, paleocurrent analysis must be integrated with a full sedimentological study. Thus each sample station will also be the location of a measured section, or at least some detailed notes on stratigraphy, lithology, faciesand fauna.

At each station it is necessary to record structural dip and strike. The orientation of the structures will be recorded, including both the azimuth and dip of planar structures that need correction. At the same time, it is necessary to note the type and scale of the structure and the lithology in which it occurs. Foreset dip directions from cross-bedding should always be measured in plan view.

Dip directions seen in vertical sections should only be recorded as a last resort. There are two reasons for this. First, as pointed out earlier in this chapter, cross-beds do not always dip directly downcurrent.

In troughs and laterally infilled channels, foresets are deposited obliquely or perpendicular to current flow. Examination of cross-bedding in plan view gives a clue to the structural arrangement of the foresets. If cross-bedding is measured from vertical facies generally only an apparent dip can be recorded. In structural geology rose diagrams are used to plot the orientation of joints and dykes. Wind directions and frequencies can also be plotted on rose diagrams.

Studying these relationships requires some techniques to put real 3D features into simple 2D visualizations. We don't always need to design super complex 3D models just to figure out the angle between two planes, right? This is why the Stereographic Projection and the Stereonets became so important to geologists. This projection is fast and efficient when we just want to analyze angular relationships. It does not preserve distances or areas of the features that are projected in it, just angles.

For today's examples I will assume you already understand how a stereonet works and are familiar with:. In Python, stereonet are veeery simple to do thanks to Joe Kington a geologist! Joe created a stereonet module for matplotlib called mplstereonet.

We are going to explore this module in this tutorial. Some extra info, from the the mplstereonet readme :. All planar measurements are expected to follow the right-hand-rule to indicate dip direction. We want to project both onto a stereonet:. Now for some reason we want to find the intersection of the bedding and the fault, which is a linear feature, as plunge and bearing, and plot it:.

Let's skip for a little more complex, but common, problem for structural geologists. Say we have a collection of plane measurements made on the limb of the fold and we want to find the attitude of the fold axis:. One liner to transform the text above to tuples of strikes and dips using the Right Hand Rule go ahead and break this code into peaces :.

Beta diagram: plot each measured plane as a great circular arc. Go ahead and explore the examples in the mplstereonet repository. A Rose Diagram shows the distributions of directional data. It is useful to analyze fault systems. I will create some random data of fault measurements and let's analyze it using a rose diagram. Share on:. I am looking for some geological data where presenting it in a rose diagram is desirable. I don't really know what kind of data is suitable.

What is WIND ROSE? What does WIND ROSE mean? WIND ROSE meaning, definition \u0026 explanation

Rose diagrams, also called polar bar plots, are useful for showing azimuthal directional data. Any dataset consisting of lots of measurements of direction or orientation could be visualized this way. A common application in sedimentology is visualizing measured cross-bedding azimuths. This can help work out the palaeocurrent direction that is, the direction of the prevailing wind or current at the time.

This paper by Sengupta and Rao has some examples and some data. The rose diagram display is also often used by structual geologists, to visualize the measured orientations of folds, faults, or other strain indicators. I'm not sure which came first, but I suspect the design was originally conceived for wind data.

In seismic acquisition and processing rose plots are essential. Another way to think of these plots is "angular histograms. What you are seeing in plots A,B, and C is the the azimuthal coverage of subsurface seismic ray paths for an "average" point in the survey.

In plot C, we see the results of stacking the two surveys. These plots are critical because sampling the point from different directions gives us new information, and these plots let us see what information we may be lacking in order to design new surveys to add more information. If you want to play around with creating polar plots, I recommend the free software GMT, generic mapping tools to get started. It can create just about any type of polar plot you want. There are newsgroups and user forums for help as well.

In python, polar and rose plots can also be created different ways, one is Plotly.GeoRose 0. A very useful little program for mapping, thank you.

Have you considered adding the ability to select a row or rows and have those readings highlighted in the stereonet? Regards, Steve. I only have the value of trend. Can you help me out. Thank you very much. This software is very easy to use. The function I like most is direct draw the data on circle while I am importing data. So I can check the data correct or not. Thank you. Can you assist or probably recommend a software that I can use to generate lineament map. Kind regards. Highly commendable, thanks for giving it free.

However, Am stuggling with the file format to allow me have rose diagram saved. Many thanks for this, very useful!

May I suggest an option to suppress the gridlines to the background? Very nice software! It even automatically convert my data t suit the plotting needs. Thanks a lot! Is not a valid Win32 application error. Brilliant, easy to use FREE software for creating simple rose diagrams that look great. Well done! Is this program compatible with Mac? I just get an error message saying no application can open the file.

The software was very easy to understand and intuitive to use — thank you! Joshua, If you install GeoRose properly, open it and type your data in or copy your data from spreadsheet and paste it to the left side table. The diagram should show up once there is data feeding. You can switch drawing modes by clicking the three buttons above the drawing canvas. To change the appearance of the diagram, you will have to configure it by using configure dialog, which can be found in configure menu.
